Established in 2001, the essay contest is an annual event. In coordination with local teachers, elementary school students are encouraged to write an essay on astronomy. The essays are then reviewed by a panel of judges and three winning entries are selected. The winning essays are announced during a presentation given by the staff of the Skylight Astronomical Society, Inc. The presentation consists of a light hearted question and answer session during a slide show of common astronomical objects. The atmosphere is very informal and the students are encouraged to participate. At the end of the presentation, the winners of the essay contest are announced. Grand prize is a beginner's telescope. Weather permitting, we hold a public star party at the school for parents and students.
